We just hit the 38 th latitude.. San Franzisco lies 1800 nm to starboard.

I’m on the water for 1 week now and had a big pod of dolphins this morning to celebrate it. One week of pure sailing, 1000 nm with no storms, no calms, just little rain and never wind straight on the nose. Thanks Poseidon!
I think the first half of the trip is the easy part from now on its getting cold quickly. Cold and wet.

So I tested my hot shower today to make sure its working properly and there is nothing to complain about.
Good feeling, think I’ll do it more often now.
The barometer shows 1040 hpa!! I’ve never been in a high like this. Tomorrow I’ll pass the center of it and probably will experience a dead calm. Wind is down to around 6 kn already and predict wind predicts less than that for tomorrow.

I Bought an iridium go and booked the predict wind service just before I left Kauai for the first attempt and I’m very happy with it. Its actually faster then I thought and I can check the weather as often as I like with the unlimited data plan. It takes about 30 min to download 500 KB. This will give me the gribfiles for the north Pacific with a 12 hourly interval, 100 km resolution, PWC & PWG model for 14 days.. (If I reduce the parameters it would be faster..)

All I need to make sure not to run into any bad weather unprepared.
Its pretty reliable and I never had a moment where the service isn’t working yet.
So for me it was worth the money. Positive side effect is that I can post these little updates to you and in case I need it can call someone..
I know the discussion going on about Sat phone vs. SSB. But I must say its hard to beat that satphone service..

Anyway.. Tomorrow I’ll probably pass the center of my route, half way will be at 40 degree N.
The clean captain

  1. Thanks for the log. Glad to hear Iridium is working for you. I helped develop the system while at Motorola in the 90’s and then supported the system at Boeing 2004-2012. Happy Sailing!

  2. Way to go Christian! Congrats on the 1,000 nm!

    Cheers! s/v Sailfish, Mexico
